INTRODUCTION TO DISK OPERATING SYSTEM
The operating system id the intermediary between the computer hardware and the instructions set by user . It translate these instructions to a form that it can be understood by the machine.

What is DISKOPERATING SYSTEM ?
- A collection of programs that supervises and controls the operations of your computer.
- Allows you to create and manage your files.
- Can also execute your programs and supervise the interface of your programs either different devices such as printers.
- Was developed by Microsoft Corporation for International Business Machines ( IBM ).

8 bits = 1 byte
1000 bytes = 1kilobyte ( Kb )

5.25 inch DD 360 Kb 8sectors / 40 tracks

How to startyour computer ?
1. Insert your System Disk in drive A then lock thedrive .
2. Switch on your CPU and monitor.
3. Wait until your monitor displayed the following ;
ENTER NEW DATE ( mm-dd-yy ) :06 – 25 – 96
ENTER NEW TIME ( hh : mm : ss )
A:\>
4. If A:\ appears, it means that the computer is ready to accept DOS commands.
FILES
FILENAME
Two parts of a file name:
1. Root / base name
2. Extension name
Ex.
command.com
command --------> Root / base name
com ----------------> Extension name
RULES INNAMING YOUR FILES;
1. Root base name must be less than or equal to eight ( 8 ) characters only and extension name must be less than or equal to three ( 3 ) characters only.
2. Spaces are not allowed.
3. Reserved words such as the following are not valid as filenames.

FILENAME
- The name given to a document , program or utility for the purpose of distinguishing everything that you have worked on with the computer.
- A distinct label for the applications that you do.
